Opinion: This Logistics Hub Plan Is A Huge Win For The Illinois Economy

Crain’s Chicago Business

Throughout my career, I have seen how smart infrastructure investments can transform communities by opening doors to economic opportunity. Canadian National’s proposed Chicago Logistics Hub in Grundy County is one of those projects.

Logistics and freight are one of the lifeblood industries of Illinois’ economy. Because we sit at the center of the nation’s transportation network, with six Class I railroads, a dense interstate system, and proximity to O’Hare International Airport, many rely directly or indirectly on the industry. CN’s proposed logistics hub builds directly on this strategic advantage, positioning Illinois to remain a leader in goods movement while unlocking major benefits for working families outside of Chicago.

Considering the job impact alone is enough to praise this hub. Projects like this typically generate hundreds of good-paying construction jobs during the buildout phase. But the long-term benefits of this project are even greater: Once operational, CN’s logistics hub will create an estimated 6,500 permanent jobs ranging from warehouse managers and freight coordinators to IT specialists and maintenance crews. These are jobs that support families and strengthen the middle class — right in our backyard.

Just look at the CenterPoint Intermodal Center in Joliet-Elwood, a similar project that over the past decade has become a major employment center in Will County. Today, that hub supports over 8,000 full-time jobs (according to a now-dated 2017 report) and has helped revitalize nearby communities through increased local spending and tax revenue. CN’s investment has the potential to do the same for us here in the Chanooka area, between the villages of Minooka and Channahon.

Beyond development, logistics hubs tend to help small businesses by creating efficient access to national and international markets. Local manufacturers and even farmers could benefit from having a state-of-the-art logistics network right outside their doors. It makes Illinois — and communities like ours outside of Chicago — more competitive and more attractive to companies looking to relocate or expand operations.

However, every development should be considered with thoughtful planning, community engagement and general safeguards. But doing that should not cause us to overlook the big picture: CN’s proposed hub is more than a rail or logistics project. It will create jobs, attract investment, and position our state for a more prosperous future.

Some reports are showing our state’s economy is slowing, underperforming compared to national and regional averages. But by embracing smart, modern projects like this CN hub, we would be investing in the future of our workers, our communities, and our economy.
